There are only two ways through which an engine displacement can be increased. Boring and stroking. Engine boring increases the cylinder diameters whereas the engine stroking increases the cylinder diameters. With the engine stroking, it offers the potential for significantly larger displacement increases than those obtained from typical engine boring. You can increase the power of an engine by increasing its capacity.

As the engine of your car gets used, over time its cylinders become worn out. This wear and tear results from the ongoing friction stress which is impelled by the pistons, the piston rings and the combustion of the engine. When you plan to refresh your engine, boring out and honing the engine cylinders gives new breath to the engine.

How to Do Engine Boring and Honing?

To get an engine boar, while using the engine machining, first of all what you need to do is dismantle the cylinder and remove it from the engine. It can be easily done by using socket wrench and sockets and various crescent wrenches as needed to unbolt the engine cylinder cover or cylinder case.

After that, also remove rest of the engine components so that the engine may free and completely bare. To get the best results, wash the engine with kerosene or similar solvent to remove the engine dirt and residue. Then leave it to dry.

Place Engine for Boring

Position the cylinder part in a holder so that it may remain locked still when working on it with a boring cutter tool. Place the cylinder in a position that it is facing upside down and straight upwards. Right after that, also place the boring cutters in a way that it is parallel with the cylinder. Then start the cylinder boring by placing the boring cutter tool to lower into the cylinder and start doing the boring work by creating a circular hole in the cylinder material.

Finally, finish the cylinder ports with the help of hand held rotator or crushing and grinding tool by chamfering the intake and exit port edges inside the cylinder. This method is suitable for only two-stroke cylinders. At the end, use a rotator burr for the initial chamfer work and sandroll bit.

Function of Boring

To understand the function and reason of engine cylinder boring, it begins with understanding the work that piston rings accomplish. The top piston ring seals the gap between the pistons and the cylinder wall during the compression stroke.

The second ring stops the engine oil moving up the cylinder wall and starts interfering with the engine compression. Now the point of understanding why is boring necessary, if the rings are not able to seal against the walls of engine cylinders, the compression gasses start blowing by the rings and contaminate the oil which is harmful for the engine. That’s why engine boring is necessary.
